S01 Ep 04: Eric Feinberg – Illegal Drugs Are Being Sold On Social Media & Section 230
Did you know that companies like Google, Facebook/Instagram and YouTube allow the sale of illegal drugs including anabolic steroids and human growth hormone on their websites? Well it’s true and this podcast will give you an inside look into why/how this is happening.
When we think about a drug dealer most of us imagine a dark and dirty street corner where cash is exchanged for drugs. In today’s world the drug dealer has entered the four walls of our homes and they’re in the hands of our loved ones.
In this episode you will hear from Eric Feinberg who is the mastermind behind his patented software that is finding the wide array of ads that are selling illegal drugs. Eric is the Founding Member of the Global Intellectual Property Enforcement Center (GIPEC).
With a background in the advertising and marketing business Eric learned how companies are marketing to their potential buyers using a set of algorithms. An algorithm is a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. These algorithms play a vital role in today’s world of Social Media.
Why are these social media companies able to get away with selling drugs on their sites? Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996 provides immunity to these companies. This is a key piece of legislation that we’re going to discuss in this podcast and how it’s led to millions of dollars of illegal drugs being peddled on some of the world’s leading social media sites.
