Results of University of Minnesota Study on Youth Steroid Use Further Validates Taylor Hooton Foundation Efforts

McKINNEY, TX (November 20, 2012) The Taylor Hooton Foundation (THF), widely acknowledged leader in the advocacy against performance enhancing substance abuse by the youth of North America, welcomed the recent study results released by the University of Minnesota.

Topline results of the study, which can be found on the THF website @ UM Steroid Study Results, mirror the statistics THF has been using for over 5 years now – specifically that 5-6% of our Middle and High School youth have used anabolic steroids or other “appearance and performance enhancing drugs” for on-field performance or to address body image issues.

“These findings may shock a lot of people around the country, but not us,” said THF Founder and President Don Hooton.  “I first testified about this problem before the now famous Steroids in Baseball hearings in 2005, and since that time we’ve been pleading to coaches, parents and other adult influencers around the country to open their eyes and realize what’s going on with our kids.  And the numbers we’ve quoted since then are exactly what this study has confirmed.”

“We’re glad this study provides further support for our message,” said Hooton, “but the real issue is ‘what is going to be done about it’ – are we going to continue looking the other way as a society, or are we going to do more to educate our kids about the dangers of these products?  Hopefully people start to understand that steroids, and even many of the over-the-counter supplements, can have adverse and potentially fatal results, especially when used by young people who are still developing physically and emotionally.”

The Taylor Hooton Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to educating North America’s young people about the dangers of anabolic steroids and other appearance and performance enhancing drugs.   The Foundation was formed in 2004 by the friends and family of Taylor Hooton after his untimely death.
