When abusing anabolic steroids and nutritional supplements damages kidneys
Young men abusing anabolic steroids and nutritional supplements are putting themselves at risk of long-term kidney injury.
Young men abusing anabolic steroids and using excessive amounts of nutritional supplements are putting themselves at risk of long-term kidney injury, according to a study in the Clinical Kidney Journal. The study analysed four bodybuilders complaining of weakness and lethargy. After intense testing including kidney biopsies, they were found to be suffering acute kidney injury. All used anabolic steroid injections and consumed excessive whey protein and creatine, a nitrogenous organic acid which increases exercise performance and muscle mass. Four weeks after discontinuing the steroids and supplements, their blood levels of creatinine returned to the normal range and they began to improve.
The study suggested a link between kidney damage and use of supplements and steroids.

The authors say the men’s type of kidney injury was rare and suggested a causal relationship with supplement and steroid use. They think inadequate hydration rather than direct toxicity probably precipitated the injuries. http://www.afr.com/lifestyle/health/mens-health/when-abusing-anabolic-steroids-and-nutritional-supplements-damages-kidneys-20150609-ghj70j
