Surfer tests positive for PEDs – banned for 20 months
The WSL just announced that perennial Brazilian competitor Raoni Monteiro tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended from competition for almost two years for violating the WSL’s anti-doping policy. Monteiro actually tested positive back at the Pipe Masters in December 2014, but it took almost six months to process the tests and formalize his punishment. It will remain in effect until August 12th, 2016.
Monteiro said the use was “unintentional” and prescribed by a physician, but accepted the ruling, and said, “I made an honest mistake but there are rules to follow and I broke them. I am looking forward to working hard with the time out of competition, getting back to my best and competing again next year”.
The then-ASP decided to implement drug testing at a board meeting in 2011; the actual testing didn’t start till the following year, and Monterio is the first pro surfer to be tested positive for PEDs since Neco Padaratz was suspended in 2005.
