Steroids blamed for domestic woes
A Hamilton man who put his engagement in doubt by embarking on a two-day "roid rage" could be facing jail.
James Watters, 38, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of assault on his fiancée in connection with altercations on Nov. 7 and 8, 2010.
Assistant Crown attorney Steve O'Brien said trouble started brewing between Watters and fiancée Rebecca Fletcher after the accused started taking steroids for bodybuilding purposes.
Fletcher reported that Watters started to show increased aggressiveness and became verbally abusive towards her.
That behaviour resulted in several instances on the days in question when Watters assaulted Fletcher in the Mohawk Road West home they shared. During that time, Watters grabbed his fiancée by the neck and threw her on the bed, threatened her and brandished a knife, leaving her to fear for her safety.
On two occasions, the accused began to cry during the abusive episodes. At one point, Watters picked up an empty syringe and threatened to end his life by injection.
On Nov. 8, Fletcher advised her partner she felt she needed to go to the hospital. At St. Joseph's Hospital, the complainant, who apparently hopes to rekindle the relationship, contacted police.
Ontario Court Justice Marjoh Agro ordered Watters to have a pre-sentence report completed and return to court Oct. 18 for sentencing.
