Huge seizure of performance enhancing steroids just days before Olympics
Two people have been arrested in London on suspicion of smuggling “extremely dangerous” anabolic steroids into the UK.
A parcel containing 1,000 sealed vials of nandrolone, a performance-enhancing class C drug often used by athletes, was seized at the Channel Tunnel’s Coquelles terminal in Northern France on July 23 – just days before the start of the Olympics. Border Forces traced the package, being sent from Hungary to London, to an address in the Eastcote area of north-west London. On Friday, officers arrested a 34-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both from Poland, on suspicion of importing a controlled substance. However there is no suggestion that the seizure is linked to the Olympic Games. Paul Bolton, a senior investigating officer from Border Force, said: “These types of drugs can be extremely dangerous, and as such there are strict controls on their importation. “As this case demonstrates, Border Force officers are on constant alert to keep illegal drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.”
