The Toronto Sun is reporting today that the alternate player on Team Jacobs, who never actually played at the Brier or the Worlds, has tested positive for steroids and has been banned for two years.
Canadian curler Matt Dumontelle will serve a two-year ban after testing positive for Methandienone Metabolites, an anabolic steroid, following the gold-medal game at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Victoria earlier this year.
Dumontelle, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., served as an alternated under Brad Jacobs at the Canadian championships before his Northern Ontario rink finished second to Sweden at the worlds.
“I take full responsibility for the findings of the positive test at the World Championship in Victoria,” Dumontelle said. “I am truly sorry for letting down my teammates, the Canadian Curling Association and curling fans across Canada.”
Dumontelle’s punishment won’t affect Canada’s silver-medal finish at the worlds. Dumontelle went on to claim he was unaware a workout supplement he had been using contained the banned agent.
