HOUMA, LA (WVUE) –
Houma police have requested tests on the dog that attacked and killed a little girl on Tuesday.
The parish’s animal control is testing the remains of Niko, the pit bull, to see if it had rabies, which could have made it aggressive. They are also testing to see if the 130 pound dog had been injected with steroids.
If steroids are found in the dog’s system, Houma police say that would be illegal and charges could possibly be filed.
Deputies killed Niko after the dog attacked four-year-old Mia DeRouen and her mother, Megan Touchet as they were watching television. The mother and daughter were able to escape to another room, where Touchet handed the little girl to first responders through a window.
Mia died at Terrebonne General Medical Center due to injuries on her face and head. Her mother survived and was released from the hospital Wednesday night.
